Bertie Rietveld is a full time knifemaker from South Africa who started making knives in 1979 as a hobby. He specializes in high art knives of his own design, and most are one of a kind. Bertie forges his own damascus, and in the late nineties started forging stainless damascus as well. His sole authorship knives are generally very elegant, and some contain gold inlays. Bertie is a member of the South African Knifemakers Guild, a full voting member of the USA Knifemakers Guild, and also a member of the Italian Knifemakers Guild. He has won various awards and recognition for his work, including the W.W. Cronk award twice, the Most Innovative Knife award at the Guild Show, and Best of Show in Las Vegas. He was voted best overall knifemaker in South Africa at the SA Guild shows in 2002 through 2005.
