When an avid knife collector, who had helped with the cleanup of the World Trade Center disaster, was offered some small pieces of bronze and steel beams in appreciation for his work, he put them to very good use. A limited edition of eight commemorative knives from Ron is one result of that effort. This knife is one of the eight made, and measures 6 5/8" open, 3 3/4" closed, and has a 2 7/8" blade. A brand new patented locking mechanism was used by Ron for this knife. The blade is unlocked with the button at the top of the bolster. There is a lever just forward of the button that, when moved forward, permanently locks the blade open. Move the lever back, push the button, and the blade will then close. The scales of this knife are made from bronze that was taken from a Trade Center Plaza sphere that was shattered by WTC steel beams and debris. While the sphere was resurrected, and now stands in Battery Park as a monument to that sad day, some small pieces that were given to the collector as a "thank you" grace the handles of these eight knives. They were cut and fit to the knife, but the surface of each scale was left just as originally found with whatever marks or dings were in them. Additionally, the show side scale is inlayed with a small steel "I Beam" that was made from a piece of one of the actual beams given to the collector. This is a very solid knife with an exciting new locking mechanism, and is a very fitting tribute to a day none of us will ever forget. Complete with folding leather pouch.
(Note: Dietmar Kressler and Steve Johnson also made commemorative knives from this steel, and each will be shown in their respective sections on this site. All three of the WTC knives have also received prominent placement in David Darom's new book coming out soon.)
